A Message from The Provincial Grand Master

Brethren

Well, nearly two months have passed since the edition of the First Rising, which announced the ability to resume masonic meetings and I have no doubt it has been the topic of many conversations or zoom meetings since. I sometimes wish I had a magic wand, not necessarily to solve the problem, but at least to come up with an answer that pleases everyone.

So, when can we get back to the real normal?  I have no idea, if I am honest.  I know that we would all love to be back in our Lodges and Chapters, performing the ritual with all our long-standing traditions and variations, the joining together in friendship at the bar and festive board.

But we have to be realistic and understanding: the announcement from UGLE means that we can meet if we want to, but if it is not right for whatever reason, we are not forced to meet.  The welfare and wellbeing of all our members is paramount.

I have two observations. First and foremost, I am pleased at the spirit in which the discussions have been held, ensuring that everyone’s views are heard and recognising that this is unprecedented.  And underlying that, it is quite clear that each lodge and each chapter is free to make its own decision.  Further, no-one individual can be forced into acting against his will.

But equally pleasing is that members are trying to come up with possible solutions, to ensure that we can meet safely.  Our true qualities include flexibility and inventiveness.  As long as the solution does not transgress the bounds of government guidelines or the Book of Constitutions, let’s see what we can do.

The use of Zoom, or similar technologies, has increased, and where that is not possible, we have kept in contact with members, old and new as well as prospective, by other means.  I have every confidence that we will continue in this vein.  And I am pleased to report that there is a very healthy pipeline of candidates waiting to be initiated across the province.

With that spirit, we will emerge stronger as individual units and as a province.  It may take time, but the goal is worth perseverance.

Keep safe and well.
